When I first got the portfolio assignment, I was extremely overwhelmed. I felt as though I had not accomplished much over the past four years. How was I going to create a portfolio with a minimum of twelve artifacts? Once I started assembling pieces to add, I realized I have done a lot more than I thought. I didn’t join the Mass Communications Department until the spring semester of 2012, so I had a late start on my major courses. However, I felt this helped me because I finally got a feel on what college classes were like.
The hardest part of the portfolio process was writing the brief description about each piece. I have become so familiar with these artifacts that it was hard to pull myself away and explain what each piece was for. The easiest part of the experience was choosing the artifacts to add. I had many pieces of work to add, so it was a little difficult figuring out which pieces should go in and which pieces should stay out.
Throughout the process, I have learned to become more confident in myself and in my abilities in the Mass Communications field. Often, I am too hard on myself; I am very critical of my work and feel that it isn’t good enough. After going through and taking third and fourth looks at my work, I realized that I have really done a fantastic job over the past seven semesters.
One thing I would not change about my experience in the Mass Communications Department would be the classes I’ve taken with Dr. Ganahl, specifically PR: Cases & Problems. Dr. Ganahl is such a knowledgeable professor who is willing to share his experiences to help his students grow. He has helped me through some difficult times and has always been very understanding. Taking PR: Cases & Problems with Dr. Ganahl was my favorite experience in these four years. This course gave me hands-on experience working on a large campaign and event. I feel confident that I would be able to use the things I learned from Dr. Ganahl in that class and apply them to whichever field I decided to go.
One thing that I think the Mass Communications Department could improve on is organization. There have been multiple occasions where the department is hosting a roundtable or other get together and things are put together at the last minute causing the presentation to start late. I am a huge believer in timeliness and punctuality, and the lateness and lack of organization makes the department look very unprofessional.
Overall, putting together this portfolio has been a very stressful but rewarding process. I learned a lot about myself and was able to reflect on the work that I have done. Through this process, I was able to see my hard work being put to use!
